Creative people like us have often experienced the struggle of making ends meet—whether as determined freelancers, students surviving on ramen, or someone quietly managing their groceries. Food insecurity isn’t just a distant issue; it’s a reality in our own community. How we choose to respond to this shared experience is crucial.
Charity isn’t enough. That’s writing a check and walking away, feeling virtuous while the same cycle rolls on. Solidarity, on the other hand, means standing shoulder-to-shoulder with those impacted (including other writers!), recognizing that anyone can need help, and working together so that no one falls through the cracks.
Charity vs. Mutual Aid: What’s the Difference?
Charity often operates from a top-down perspective, much like tossing a life raft from the deck of a luxury cruise ship. This approach can create a sense of disconnection, as it implies a hierarchy in which the giver is removed from the recipient’s experience.
In contrast, mutual aid and solidarity are about rowing together in the same boat—everyone contributing and supporting one another. Mutual aid means pooling resources, sharing knowledge, and making sure all members of the community have what they need. This ground-up approach fosters belonging and equality. We’re all in this together.
Writers inherently grasp the significance of community, weaving narratives and forging connections through words and networks. By using our skills and platforms, writers have a unique opportunity to champion mutual aid, directing creativity and influence toward the greater good. Through this collective effort, we can cultivate a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
Why Writers Should Care
Writers are not merely storytellers; we’re sensemakers, mythbusters, and community architects. Our craft extends beyond narrative—it challenges perceptions and forges bonds between people. Many of us have faced hunger—both metaphorical and literal.
The gig economy, often hyped as liberating, too often fails to provide stable income, leaving us to navigate those feast-and-famine cycles. When your fridge is empty, the stress and uncertainty can feel overwhelming.
When we prioritize solidarity in our writing and communities, we’re not just giving back. We’re challenging the idea that some deserve plenty while others struggle to meet basic needs. By focusing our efforts on mutual support, we advocate for collective well-being and help dismantle barriers that perpetuate disparities.
In doing so, we embrace our roles as creators and caretakers, nurturing not just our own voices but the voices of those around us.
Practical Ways Writers Can Show Up
- Use Your Platform: Blog, post, or share about food insecurity. Share resources, bust stigma, and keep the conversation going.
- Share the Wealth: If you have a book launch or a popular post, consider donating a portion of proceeds to hunger orgs or mutual aid funds.
- Organize: Collaborate on a charity zine, anthology, or event. Pool talent, raise funds, and shine a spotlight on the issue.
- Offer Your Skills: Volunteer editing, copywriting, or social media support to local hunger relief groups.
- Build Networks: Connect writers in need with resources (food pantries, emergency funds, support groups). Make info easy to find and stigma-free.
This Is About All of Us
If you’ve ever found yourself anxious about how to afford groceries, you’re not alone. If you haven’t, someone close to you likely has. Food insecurity is common—more than most realize.
We’re not alone in this fight. Solidarity means building systems and support networks so no one has to experience hunger. Writers and storytellers can turn words into action—raising awareness, sparking conversation, and driving change that leads to real solutions.
Together, we can create environments where everyone has access to nutritious food and support for themselves and their families.
