Most productivity advice I’ve found is written by neurotypical, able-bodied people, and it just doesn’t land when your body and brain have their own weather systems.
In which case, if you’re neurodivergent, disabled, or chronically conditioned, like me, you already know that “just set your alarm earlier” and “grind harder” is the kind of advice that makes you want to throw your plans out the window. Sustainable writing isn’t about squeezing more hours in front of a keyboard; it’s about working with your mind and body, not against them.
Here’s what actually works, from one creative spoonie to another:
1. Start With Your Reality, not someone else’s
Forget the trendy TikTok morning routines and the ego-driven flaunts of an exclusive “5am writing club.” Your creative flow is uniquely yours, and it deserves to be celebrated. Perhaps your most inspired writing emerges while you’re nestled in the softness of your bed, a soothing heating pad draped across your lap, as the afternoon sun gently filters through the curtains at 2 pm. Or maybe you find clarity in brief, potent bursts of creativity during short, revitalizing breaks.
Some may see this as us just being plain lazy. But, is this laziness? Absolutely not! That’s a social construct that wasn’t meant for us. It’s a testament to your adaptability and understanding of what truly fuels your artistic spirit.
Permission granted: your process doesn’t have to look like anybody else’s. It just has to work for you.
2. Chunk It Down and Celebrate Every Win
Developing a “writing habit” doesn’t require a daily commitment or for every day to look the same, in practice. Instead, focus on setting the tiniest achievable goal, be it a single sentence, a brief paragraph, or even a fleeting note capturing a piece of dialogue. Each time you meet that goal, consider it a triumph, a small victory in your creative journey. And if inspiration strikes and you find yourself writing more, revel in that delightful bonus, celebrating the overflow of your thoughts and ideas.
Here’s a pro tip: Keep a visible record of your wins, whether it’s a journal, a streak tracker, or a jar of sticky notes. Seeing your progress, no matter how small, can be a powerful motivator. So, celebrate every win, no matter how modest, and let it fuel your journey.
3. Work With Your Energy, Not Against It
Pay close attention to those fleeting moments when you feel your mind at its sharpest, bursting with creativity, or wrapped in a soothing calmness. These precious moments are worth safeguarding with care. Keep in mind that these optimal moments may shift from day to day, influenced by the ebbs and flows of your well-being. Embrace this self-awareness; it holds immense power.
Also, recognize that sometimes the most effective writing ritual is to step back and allow your thoughts to percolate. Grant yourself the grace to take a guilt-free break whenever you need it. Your writing will emerge richer and more vibrant as a result.
4. Automate, Outsource, or Skip the Unnecessary
If you find that admin tasks sap your energy, think about streamlining or grouping them together on days when your motivation is low. Take advantage of various tools, like Notion for organizing your thoughts, reminders to keep you on track, text-to-speech software for effortless dictation, or even AI-driven tools, to help manage your tasks, to-do lists, and bursts of creativity.
It’s essential to release the burden of what doesn’t serve YOU in your writing journey. Delegate those tasks when possible, freeing yourself to focus on what truly inspires you.
Remember: writing is the priority. Everything else is just noise.
5. Community Counts (Even If It’s Tiny or Virtual)
Discover your community, whether it’s a single friend, a vibrant online group, or a creative partner who truly understands your journey. The essence of accountability doesn’t need to feel burdensome or overwhelming.
Sometimes, simply expressing, “I wrote a sentence today,” can bring a sense of accomplishment and connection. These small moments of sharing can foster motivation and encouragement, creating a supportive environment where creativity can flourish.
6. Rest is Part of the Habit
Your body requires rest; It’s simple biology. Make it a critical part of your daily routine. Embrace recovery days, gentle days, and those low-energy moments as essential chapters in your journey.
Remember, you are a writer, even on the days filled with dreams, strategic planning, or simply navigating the challenges of survival. Each of these experiences contributes to your creative tapestry, allowing your voice to flourish in its own unique time and place.
Bottom Line
You don’t need to be a content mill to be a “real” writer. Sustainable habits aren’t built on hustle; they’re built on listening to your body, celebrating small steps, and creating with compassion. Your words matter. The way you write them on your own terms matters even more. Your writing journey is unique, and the strategies you adopt should reflect that uniqueness.
