The 80s— Life was different then: music, movies, Saturday morning cartoons, and chokeable toys for toddlers. Even our medical knowledge was different. I was born in this era, 1980, to be more specific.
Scientific data and medicine were still and are still very biased toward white men and boys when it comes to autism, and even more so during the 80s. That included every piece of written information and criteria about autism. Everything. Even up until this point, what was learned through studying little white boys appeared to be little girls, particularly of any color or ethnicity other than that of a jar of emotional support Mayo, was nearly nonexistent.
