The Waning of the Sun King

Come closer, friends, and warm yourselves by the hearth. For tonight, the cards and the pendulum whisper a tale the courtiers dare not tell aloud…”

Once, the Sun King strode boldly, full of fire and restlessness, chasing ventures without plan or patience. His torch burned high, yet its light wavered—casting long, uneasy shadows.

But illusion wrapped him tight. The Magician reversed his tricks, and what once looked like power began to unravel into confusion, false promises, and whispers of ill intent. Around him, advisers circled, each with their own design, each tugging at the fraying cloak of his reign.

The King of Pentacles reminded him of duty, steady hands, and sober labor, but he would not bow to plodding work. Instead, he strained toward glory, even as his body faltered.

A chorus rose from the Three of Pentacles: “Listen, Majesty. Collaboration, not command, is what brings true success.” Yet the Sun King ignored the builders and singers who could have steadied his house.

The High Priestess whispered softly of secrets within, of wisdom found in silence. But the king did not listen to her voice, nor trust the inner guide that might have kept him whole.

And now—the Four of Swords lies overturned. Restlessness. Burnout. Stagnation. The Sun King longs for rest, but no rest will come. The hearth grows cold. The feast ends bitterly. And though his courtiers still raise golden goblets, their eyes glance sidelong, waiting for the inevitable dusk.

So mark this, friends: a Sun may blaze and boast, but even kings must reckon with the turning of the seasons. Power wanes. Illusions fade. And the common folk, gathered in the tavern, keep the most actual memory in their stories.

The bard sets down her cards, the pendulum stills, and the room silently falls.
