The Five-Minute Declutter: Creative Relief Without the Overwhelm

If you’re a writer, artist, or neurodivergent creative, you already know the truth: traditional decluttering advice often sounds impossible. “Just organize your whole office in an afternoon!” they say. Meanwhile, we’re over here, staring at the pile on our desk, the 67 open browser tabs, and the digital avalanche of half-finished drafts.

Here’s the Dreamspace take: decluttering isn’t about minimalism or perfection. It’s about making just enough space for your mind (and your creativity) to breathe. That’s why I swear by the five-minute declutter, a simple, low-pressure ritual that actually helps, no matter your starting point. It’s a relief from the overwhelming traditional advice.

Why Five Minutes? Because Anything More Can Feel Impossible

Big declutter projects can be paralyzing, especially if you live with executive dysfunction or you’re just stretched thin. But five minutes? Most of us can find that even on our busiest or hardest days. And sometimes, that’s all it takes to spark momentum. It’s a small step that can lead to significant change, giving you hope and motivation.

Your Five-Minute Declutter Ritual

1. Pick a Micro-Zone

Don’t try to fix your whole life. Pick one tiny space: your desktop, your writing notebook, your phone’s notes app, a single drawer, the pile of “to be read” books.

2. Set a Timer (or Cue a Song)

Five minutes. That’s it. Set a timer, or press play on a favorite tune.

3. Do a Quick Sort

Move fast:

  • Keep: What you use, love, or need right now
  • Move: Anything that belongs somewhere else
  • Trash/Delete: Broken pens, old drafts, actual trash, duplicates
  • “Maybe” Pile: If you’re unsure, set aside to revisit later

If you’re on your computer: Archive or delete a folder, move unused files, or sweep everything into a “Sort Me Later” folder. (Yes, that counts!)

4. Remove One Barrier

Clear a mug, wipe a spot on your desk, and put your favorite pen within reach. What’s one little fix that will make today easier?

5. Celebrate!

Yes, really. Take a photo, text a friend, or tell yourself: “I did it.” Tiny victories add up. When you celebrate the small stuff, you turn chores into rituals and self-care. It’s a way to feel accomplished and motivated to continue your decluttering journey.

When Executive Dysfunction Hits…

Some days, five minutes feels like too much. If that’s you today, start with one item. (Move a single thing, or close just one browser tab.) Every little bit is progress.

For Writers: Where to Start?

  • Draft folders overflowing? Archive last month’s drafts.
  • Notebooks multiplying? Choose one to keep handy, shelve the rest.
  • Digital chaos? Move everything into a “Sort Me Later” folder. Seriously.

Decluttering is Dreamspace Ritual

Clearing space, even for five minutes, is an act of care for yourself and your creative work. Forget perfect. Forget “done.” Make a little room for yourself, right now. It’s enough.
