Sometimes, just getting a list of topic ideas for the week’s blog feels like a triumph. And we’re not even talking about writing them yet. For those of us living with chronic pain, fatigue, ADHD, or neurodivergence, “productivity hacks” aren’t magic spells — they’re duct tape, string, and whatever spoons you can find.
“But you still show up.”
Here’s the secret: I don’t always show up the way I planned. Sometimes it’s with a perfectly formatted post. Other times, it’s three sentences typed via voice-to-text from my phone in bed. This week? It’s a mixture of both. And you know what? Both count.
Strategies for Blogging with Brain Fog
Voice-to-Text Is My Co-Writer (My personal favorite):
There are days when sitting down to type feels overwhelming to me — those moments when my thoughts are racing and my fingers struggle to keep up. Instead, I choose to voice my ideas aloud, letting the words flow freely. It might be a bit chaotic and unrefined at times, but that rawness adds character to my thoughts. Is it “good enough?” Absolutely! With the help of voice-to-text technology, I can transform my spoken words into written form, capturing the essence of my ideas in real time. This process not only eases the burden of typing but also allows for a more organic expression of creativity as I articulate my thoughts.
I break things down into tiny pieces. No “write a whole post.” Just:
- Open the doc.
- Write one sentence.
- Add a tag.
- Insert an image.
- Celebrate every check mark.
Permission to Phone It In:
Not every post needs to be a work of art or a literary triumph. There are times when simply being present and sharing your thoughts is more than sufficient. Your audience is comprised of real people who understand the ups and downs of creativity — they appreciate the effort and authenticity behind each message.
It’s perfectly okay to prioritize consistency over perfection; sometimes, the act of showing up and engaging with your readers is what truly matters.
For instance, a post with a personal anecdote, a reflection on a recent experience, or a brief update on your current projects can be ‘good enough’ and still resonate with your audience.
Automation & Catch-Up Days:
Plan and schedule your posts in advance on days when you feel productive and inspired. Designate specific catch-up days to address any content you may have missed, ensuring you stay on track.
For example, you can set aside a day at the beginning or end of each week to review your content plan, make adjustments, and fill in any gaps. Utilize templates to streamline your content creation process and maintain consistency in your messaging.
Remember, producing “good enough” drafts is far better than having no drafts at all, as it keeps the creative flow going and allows for improvements later on.
Real Life Example
Today’s post? Written from bed, dog at my feet, with a heating pad and a cup of tea. I dictated half of it, then tidied up the rest later. If you read a typo, chalk it up to “authenticity.” I showed up — and that’s enough.
I remember a time when I was struggling with a particularly painful flare-up, and all I could manage was a short post about my experience. It wasn’t my best work, but it was honest and it resonated with many of my readers. That’s the power of showing up, even when it’s not perfect.
Forgive Yourself for Imperfect Progress
You’re not lazy. You’re not failing. You’re living in a body and mind that sometimes asks you to slow down. Progress, not perfection, is the name of the game. Your creative space should be a safe place for “imperfect” creativity — mine is, and you’re always welcome here.
If today, all you can do is add a photo, jot down a few lines, or even just think about your blog. You’re still showing up. And that matters. There’s no gold medal for a perfect streak — so celebrate every tiny victory. Some weeks, the win is just remembering your login. That’s still a win.
