Dear AI, Please Make Me Sound Like a Human

Dear AI,

Please make me sound like a human. Not like a customer service rep trying to cancel their gym membership while being watched by three managers. Not like a robot experiencing its first existential crisis mid-email.

Just… human.

Because apparently, I sound like a robot. And not even a cool robot. Not Wall-E. Not R2-D2. Not even the sad toaster from the Brave Little Toaster. I sound like Microsoft Clippy’s socially awkward cousin who writes messages like,

“Dear Sir or Madam, Kindly advise on the next procedural steps at your earliest convenience.”

The Struggle Is Real (and Neurodivergent)

The tone is difficult, sometimes. Particularly if you have autism, ADHD, or both—hey, I’m one of those. Even when it does, social scripting feels like mental acrobatics. All emails, text messages, and direct messages may be subject to internal revisions.

  • “Does this sound too cold?”
  • “Am I being too direct?”
  • “Should I put a smiley face here or will they think I’m unstable?”

Neurodivergent folks often get labeled as curt, blunt, or robotic when we’re just trying to communicate clearly. If I sound formal, it’s not because I’m a jerk—it’s because I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to say “No thank you” in a way that didn’t sound like I was starting a war.

How Can AI Help Neurodivergent Writers Sound Human?

AI is a fantastic ally for neurodivergent writers, enhancing the writing process to make it easier and more enjoyable. AI writing assistants can improve language and tone, providing suggestions that make writing sound friendly and relatable, which is great for those who find social communication challenging.

These tools also help organize thoughts clearly through outlining and prompts, allowing writers to effectively elaborate on their ideas. Overall, AI offers personalized guidance and quick feedback, empowering neurodivergent writers to express their authentic voices and connect with their audiences while celebrating their individuality.

Enter AI, Stage Left

You know who doesn’t mind tone policing?

ChatGPT. Grammarly. AI tools that can take your “I am no longer able to fulfill this request” and turn it into “Hi there! Thanks so much for reaching out—I’m afraid I won’t be able to help with this, but I hope your project goes smoothly!”

Magic.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I still write all my own stuff. The brain works just fine, thank you. But when I’m tired, burned out, masking like hell, or struggling to untangle a thought, AI can step in like a translator. Not to replace me, but to interpret me.

It’s Not About Faking—It’s About Translating

This isn’t about being fake. It’s not about erasing your neurodivergence or polishing every sentence until it sounds like it came from a corporate newsletter. It’s about expressing yourself in a way that lands. That feels good. That doesn’t take 2 hours to write a 2-sentence reply.

Tone help isn’t cheating. It’s support. Sometimes, I’ll even prompt my AI buddy with: “Can you make this sound like I’m not about to quit my job in the middle of a perfectly normal Slack message?”

And it’ll go: “Sure! Here’s a warmer version that still gets the point across.”

Thanks, buddy.

The Funniest Side Effect? It Works TOO Well

Sometimes it works so well that I don’t even recognize myself. I’ll copy/paste a message into the tone adjuster, and it’ll come back with:

“Hi! I hope you’re having a wonderful day :) Just following up on this!” And I’ll sit there thinking, who is this cheerful sociopath, and why do they sound so friendly?

But you know what? It lands. People reply. Misunderstandings drop. The world doesn’t end. And sometimes—just sometimes—I learn a better way to phrase something for next time.

Closing Thoughts from Your Resident Soft Robot

So yeah. Dear AI, thank you for helping me sound less like a malfunctioning fridge and more like the soft, sarcastic, bizarre human that I am.

Thank you for translating when the gears in my head are grinding. Thank you for being my social buffer, my tone adjuster, my little semantic sugar packet.

You’re not replacing my voice. You’re just helping me use it.
