You Don’t Have to Write by the Numbers: How I Find My Chapters (and Why That’s Enough)

Every November, my feeds fill up with NaNoWriMo updates—word counts, progress bars, group sprints. I see questions everywhere: “How many words should a chapter be?” “How do I hit my daily target?” And every year, I remember: I’m just not built for that.

Here’s why. For me, a chapter isn’t about word count, or page numbers, or some secret formula for “how long it should be.” It’s more like an episode in a TV series playing out in my mind. I see the story as scenes—sometimes vivid, sometimes hazy, always with a sense of pacing that feels natural to me. I know when an episode, or a chapter, begins and ends not because I hit a certain number, but because I feel it. The arc rises, something happens, the scene shifts, and it just… clicks. It’s time to close that chapter and move to the next.

That’s how I write. Sometimes a chapter is long, sometimes it’s short. Sometimes I have a fully fleshed scene; sometimes just snippets and vibes, a handful of lines, a mood. The only rule is that I let the story tell itself, and trust my intuition along the way.

Why “Write 1,667 Words a Day” Never Worked for Me

Don’t get me wrong: I love seeing other writers chase big goals and share their victories. But for me? Word targets feel more like a ceiling than a springboard. My process is deeply influenced by my neurodivergence and chronic health stuff. Some days, creativity means a nap, a walk, or an hour of letting my mind wander. Some days, I write a burst of dialogue at 9pm when I should be winding down for bed. It’s chaotic, but it works for me.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me:
You’re not less of a writer if you don’t work in neat, daily increments or hit a magic number. You’re not failing if your chapters come out lopsided, uneven, or “wrong.” Stories aren’t spreadsheets.

Creative Process Is Personal—Find Yours

If you thrive with structure, routines, and numbers—amazing! But if you don’t, you’re not broken or “less professional.” You’re simply working with a different internal compass.
For me, seeing each chapter as an “episode” keeps me grounded. The emotional arc and natural rhythm mean more than any number ever could.

And if you’re reading this and thinking, “I can’t do it the way everyone else does”—welcome to the club. You don’t have to.
Find what works for you, trust it, and keep going.

Your Story, Your Way

In the Dreamspace, we write on our own terms.
Maybe you’re all vibes and no outline. Maybe you write your ending first and backtrack. Maybe you write a chapter in a day, or in a dozen tiny bursts over a month. It all counts.

You don’t have to chase the trends, the targets, or the timer.
You only have to keep telling the story that’s yours to tell, in the way only you can.

What’s your creative process look like? If you’ve found a method that works for your brain (and body), share it in the comments—your wisdom might help someone else break free from the myth of “the right way.”
