Sonnet to the Brontosaur, My Noble Steed

If you could bring back one dinosaur, which one would it be?

Upon a plain where grasses swayed in peace,
There walked a beast both gentle, large, and slow—
No claws to rend, no urge to chase or fleece,
But leafy dreams where brontofeet would go.

O massive friend! With neck so long and grand,
Thou’dst ferry me o’er hill and vale and stream;
No need for cars, nor gas, nor mortal hand—
Just saddle thee and ride into a dream.

I’d build a house upon thy mighty back,
And hang my laundry from thy sweeping tail;
Together we would wander every track,
No Amazon can match thy leafy mail.

So bring thee back, great beast of ancient lore,
My veggie-munching, bronto dinosaur.
