Today, Americans are waking up to the smell of barbecues, the sound of fireworks, and the slow burn of betrayal. However, we are also awakening to our own resilience and determination to stand up against injustice.
Yesterday, while flags were being hung and grill coals were heating up, 17 million people were shoved further into precarity by a budget bill so callous, so gut-wrenching, that it reads more like a declaration of war on the American people than a national budget. This bill, with its ruthless cuts and heartless policies, has left families struggling to put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads, and afford basic healthcare.
Medicaid? Slashed.
SNAP? Gutted.
WIC? Dismembered.
Veterans? Used for campaign photo-ops, then discarded like yesterday’s sparklers.
Disabled citizens? Forgotten entirely.
Our children? Their future traded for tax breaks and campaign merch.
They celebrated this cruelty with a party in the chambers. Called it “the best birthday gift America could ask for.” They cheered as they starved us. And today, they expect us to stand for the national anthem and pretend we don’t see what’s burning.
But we do see. We see the hypocrisy. We see the lies.
We see the fascist playbook flipping page by page in real time. And we refuse to celebrate.
They want us to feel small. They want us to give up. To curl into silence while they trample on the bones of the systems that once promised—however imperfectly—to protect the most vulnerable.
But here’s the truth: They can’t legislate us out of existence. We are still here. We are still loud. We are still fighting. And we need every single one of you to stand with us, to raise your voices, and to refuse to be silenced.
And while we may not have billionaires or media empires behind us, we have something they never will: a united community. We have the stories of the harmed, the proof of the pain, and the power of the pen.
We will not go quietly.
Not today. Not ever.
So this Independence Day, we don’t celebrate a flag. We don’t celebrate a lie. We celebrate the unbroken resistance. We honor the people still standing. And we recommit to our cause, promising to keep going.
