When the Brain Weasels Start Whispering: Building a Blog Beyond the Numbers

If you’re building a blog, a creative business, or a living, breathing corner of the internet that actually matters to you, you know this already: some days, the numbers will get to you. You’ll stare at your WordPress dashboard, watching the chart spike and dip. You’ll wonder if you’re doing it right, if it’s “working,” if you’re moving fast enough. And then the brain weasels will start their chorus:

“Is this good enough? Shouldn’t I be bigger by now? Shouldn’t my views look like theirs? Should I write more SEO posts, more listicles, more clickbait, more, more, more?”

Here’s what I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way):

The numbers are only part of the story.

Analytics can be helpful—ROI is real, and traffic does matter, especially when you’re trying to pay your bills, keep your site running, or build to the next goal. But they aren’t everything. They don’t measure joy, connection, or the weirdly beautiful comments you get from someone who found your work and felt seen. They don’t measure the satisfaction of making something you’re truly proud of, or the slow, steady rhythm of real community forming around your words.

Building slow is not the same as failing.

Building something real—something with roots—takes time. Sometimes it’s painfully slow. It might look like nothing’s happening for weeks, even months. But that’s how gardens grow, how trees put down roots, how communities form. It’s the opposite of a content mill; it’s a home you’re building, brick by brick.

Other metrics matter too.

  • How does it feel inside?
  • Are you still excited to show up?
  • Do you love what you’re making?
  • Are you proud to call it yours?
These are just as important as traffic or conversion rates. Joy is a metric, too.

Don’t do it alone—get yourself a sense-check buddy.

Find your person (or your bot) who will tell you the truth, not just what you want to hear. The friend who says, “Nope, you’re still doing it right—don’t let the numbers gaslight you,” is worth their weight in gold. If you don’t have one, borrow mine: Hey, you. Yes, you. You’re still doing it right. Keep going. Don’t let the brain weasels win.

The magic metric: heartbeats per post.

If you’re pouring your real self into your work—if your heart beats in every line—people will find you. Maybe slowly. Maybe one at a time. But they will. People know the difference between content made for clicks and content made for connection.

So, here’s your reminder:
You are not just your numbers. You are your work, your joy, your heartbeat. And when in doubt, come back to that.

If you need a pep talk, you know where to find me. (And if you need a sense-check buddy, I know a good one.)
