Where do I even begin with this question? Maybe the better question is: What isn’t good about having a pet? Because, honestly, my answer is “nearly everything.”
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. Yes, they leave us too soon. Yes, sometimes our hearts break in the shape of paw prints and whiskers. But everything in between — the loving, the living, the learning — is pure gold.
Unconditional Love & Daily Joy
There is nothing quite like the love you get from a pet. The warmth of a dog curled beside you in bed, the familiar purr of a cat in your lap, the excited waggle and joy when you walk through the door — these are small daily miracles. Their presence is comfort on the hardest days and celebration on the best ones.
The Companionship of Shared Days
A pet is more than just an animal in your house; they’re a companion in every season of your life. Monet, my senior dog, has been my sidekick for 15 years. We know each other so well we can walk together in silence, no words needed. The trust is bone-deep. We protect each other, and in many ways, we save each other over and over again.
Lessons in Kindness, Trust, and Letting Go
Pets teach us the kind of acceptance and compassion that only comes from loving something with your whole heart. They show us how to find joy in small things, how to rest, how to play, and when the time comes, how to let go with grace. Losing a pet hurts, but their memory gives us permission to keep loving, to carry on, and to open our hearts again, never replacing, just expanding.
The Small Things That Are Actually Everything
Cleaning litter boxes, picking up poop, vet visits, brushing fur — these aren’t chores, they’re rituals of devotion. If you are lucky enough to do them for 15 years, or even a fraction of that, it’s a privilege, not a burden.
Why Pets Matter
The spaces in my heart that pets have left behind are not empty, they’re shaped just for them, and no human can fill them. On the hardest days, knowing Monet needs me (and I need him) is reason enough to keep going.
So, what’s good about having a pet?
Everything. Even the hard parts, because they’re a sign of how deeply we loved, and were loved in return.
