Day 4 – A Day at the Beach: Relaxation and Comfort Food

The day started slowly — just coffee, leftovers for breakfast, and a little light work.

Later, my cousin, mom, and I grabbed lunch at a little sandwich shop and headed out to the National Seashore. The sun is out, and the Briny sea air will do wonders for frazzled nerves and anything that ails you. It is no wonder that doctors of not that long ago used to prescribe going to the ocean as a treatment for everything from post-partum to tuberculosis and everything in between.

The air is cool, as is the water. Too cool for swimming, but just fine for wading, walking, reading, and relaxing. And great for pictures.

The waves gently lapped on the shore as we sat, chatted, watched the gulls and plovers, and had our yummy lunches.

And honestly, I have no idea what got up our asses, but it must have been one wild hair because it began with a potato chip and a few pebbles collected from the sandy shore, and it turned into a whole thing. Is there Lore? A little. And that is to come. I promise, but here’s an aerial shot of the found object, abstract piece. It’s not quite a sandcastle, but the gnomes were pleased.

We got back around 5, cleaned up, and relaxed for a bit. I zoned out and stalked Zillow for a hot minute, scoped homes in and around Provincetown (Ouch. I need to sell a few more books for those), and then we were off to dinner at a family-style restaurant, called The Mayflower that has been around since 1929. The restaurant is now owned and operated by the third generation. It was charming, reasonably priced and delicious! There were even caricatures from over 80 years ago. It was great, and honestly, the best food we’ve had thus far.

I’m just not a fancy girl. I like simple, easy-going, and relaxed. It was comfort food — pasta, burgers, and pork chops — perfect. They still had an extensive adult magic juice list, which was great, but being a “basique-girly”, I opted with the classic Shirley Temple and some yummy manicotti — I broke my sandwich streak. The fam was impressed.

We returned to a cozy dessert of homemade brownies, accompanied by a bit of ice cream, and a very nice introduction to Miss Richfield 1981, whom we had met in the wild a bit earlier that evening on our walk home.

Tomorrow, we’re doing a dune tour, so I’ll be sure to update soon.
